Pics??

Hi all!

Thanks so much for the well wishes for Holly!  I’m sure they’re helping – she’s continuing to improve every day, and I think it’s been helped by having so many doggie prayers and well wishes sent her way by friends new and old!

Today she is still quivering at the site, and a few times throughout her body.  But she doesn’t appear to be in pain – she still seems pretty relaxed even when the quivers start.  I am finding that if I ice the site when the quivering starts it sometimes stops or settles down a bit.  She also seems to like it when I ice the site.  Our vet called today and said it could be the body’s way of resolving the missing limb.  She’s on deramaxx and tramadol, plus an antibiotic (clavamox this time – she didn’t do well on baytril after her first surgery).  We’ve been outside a few times today – I thought she would be cold because having been partly shaved for the operation, but she loves it out there!  She wanted to take a walk, so we walked down the street and back.  She wished I would let her go further, but I gently but firmly told her that was enough for now – hopefully we’ll have plenty of time for long walks once she’s recovered.  I’m just so glad to see her excited about being outside!

I will try to figure out how to post some pictures.  I added a picture as my avatar, but am not sure when you see that.  It’s of Holly by the Christmas tree.  She’s a Christmas puppy (born 12/20/01), hence her name.  I think I was able to add two pics – one of her crazy sleeping position (which we’re hoping to see again once she recovers), and one after her first surgery.  I need to upload the more recent pics from this week and will post those as soon as I can figure it out!

Thanks again for all the well wishes – it helps so much to have the support of all of you!

  1. Oh what a beautiful girl. I too noticed Tehya quivering yesterday today not so bad. If I notice it again then I will try the ice as well. She is pretty quiet today sleeping on her bed by the fireplace. Her appetite is still good especially for the treats, the bruising is coming out big time now and we noticed some discharge from the wound on her bed this morning but it seems to have stopped.
We go to the oncologist on Tuesday afternoon to see about starting Chemo treatments. So I will let you know how we make out from there.
Good luck to and Holly…I hope you are getting rest as well as people have told me rest when you can as this takes a lot out of us as well.

  2. We found that if we used a heating pad on caira after the amputation she would calm right down. Sometimes we put it over the site (always use a towel and constantly check temp) to keep down seromas, and sometimes on the other muscles that are working to hard to learn a new way of holding the body up. Sometimes she didn’t want to lay down to do it, but once the heat was on and we were sitting there talking to her, she’d let out a big sigh and you could feel her whole body relax.
We never tried ice, but if it works for Holly-awesome!

  3. She sounds like she is doing really well. Give her time- she will amaze you with the things she will still be able to do, or how she will compensate.
Maggie is also a rear amp and gets around fine now. Because she is so little a flight of stairs is out of her range now, but she will go up a couple. She will come down anything, but I am now trying to restrict her a little from the big jumps as she is nearing 11 years old and I want to protect her a little more now.
I hope the healing process continues smoothly.

    p.s. Tani my quad-pug sleeps like that…

  4. Holly, do we have great people here or what?

Glad to hear things are progressing well. Lots of us have some twitching where our leg was removed. Most times it subsides. It is a little weird for a while, but hang in there and don’t walk too far, you’ll be well in no time!

  5. I added a picture as my avatar, but am not sure when you see that.

  6. Best wishes and healing thoughts to you and Holly.
Looks like we’re on the same timeline and both experiencing a Chicago winter. Brrrr. Where did Holly have her surgery? Timber went to Arboretumview in Downers Grove. Timber’s rear leg was amputated on Dec.30th…we brought him home on New Years day…we’re now 6 days post-op and he’s walking well and would like to spend more time outside in the snow. I actually have to restrain him from overdoing it. Hope Holly is recuperating well and you’re getting some rest.

  7. Hi Denise and Timber!

We must live pretty close – Holly had her surgery at Village Veterinary Practice in Clarendon Hills. Holly has likewise been walking well – today we walked all the way around the block! She wanted to go further but I don’t want her to overdo it. She’s been sleeping well, so that translates to my sleeping well also! So far so good… and we’re hoping she continues to improve. I’m glad Timber is doing well, too! Once they’re recovered we should take them on a walk/hop together!

  8. After twenty-six years, Wheatens continue to astound me. They are always strong at heart–they prove it to me time and time again. Holly is amazing, her second major operation in a month. Her response is Wheaten kisses, her Irish spirit always showing through. I must give credit to Susan and Dave, they’ve stood by their dog when others would have given up. Love definitely conquers all.

  9. Dear Holly and Susan,
    Yes, we’re pretty close…we’re in Palos Park…
wouldn’t we draw a crowd walking/hopping our tripawds together! I loved Holly’s new coat…Timber has a red and black plaid one to cover (just barely) his bare bum…it was a gift, but coincidentally matches MY red and black plaid winter coat, so we look pretty amusing tramping around in the snow…how’s Holly’s incision? Tehya talked about bruising and discharge, did you experience that? I must have had the world’s best surgeon…
the incision was neat, no bleeding or discharge, no quivering, no bruising, no swelling, just sweet and pink as a baby’s bottom…
so glad to be able to share with you…happy recovery…stay warm and hopeful…
    Denise and Timber
