Day 3

Holly’s been home 3 days now, and is still doing well.  I am thankful for the forums here – it helped explain some of her skittishness, which I am now thinking could be phantom pain.  She’s better today than yesterday – she seemed “spooked” several times yesterday.  She would jump up and run to another room.  I’ve noticed the incision site quivering at times, too.  Our vet told us to ice the site for 10 minutes 3 times a day, and that seems to help her.  She is also enjoying going outside – it’s 19 degrees in Chicago today and I think the cold air must feel good to her – she hasn’t wanted to go outside so often for a long time.  Her spirits remain good, and she is really enjoying all the family time with everyone home from school and work.  Thanks for all who have wished her well.  We’re hoping she continues to steadily improve.  And I’ll continue to peruse the forums here – it really helps to read what others have experienced!

I think I was able to add 2 more pics of her post-op.

  1. Hey there Holly and family,

It sounds like you are doing a great job with the post op period. All the things you talk about are normal. It is good to read the forums, educate yourself about what to expect. Paris also loved the cold and snow last January after her surgery.

We are neighbors…sort of, I am near South Bend, about 90 miles east of Chicago (I grew up in Brookfield). We also have the cold and 15″ of new snow!!

Give her love and care and hang in there. Be sure to ask for support if you need it as well as “ask a vet” on the forum, Dr. Pam is wonderful.

    Keep us informed….any photos coming?

  2. Hang in there, Holly. The first two weeks are a little crazy, but you will be up to all your old tricks in short order. In the meantime, enjoy all the hugs and treats and scritches. Opie

  3. Hey Holly –
I have to say you have a “cool, calm and collected Mom!” She sure sounds it anyways! 😉 Good for you. Now is the start of getting reallllllly spoiled(more!) – he-he 🙂

  4. Hi Holly and pawrents,

As you have probably already read on the forums, the first two weeks are the worse… Holly will be adjusting to her 3 legs, recovering from a pretty big surgery, and is doped up on pain meds. The icing is a good idea… and if there are still problems, you could ask your vet about adding gabapentin to the medication list, if they think that might help.

Hurry up and post some pictures of your adorable little baby!!!

  5. Thanks for the comments. I will ask our vet about gabapentin – from what I’ve read here it does help with phantom pain. I promise to get some pics from this week posted! It’s good to hear that Paris also had surgery during the winter – I was worried that with the cold and snow and ice it would be a terrible time, but it appears to be working out well so far. We have to be careful on the sidewalks, but she’s good about walking on the snow instead of the sidewalk when there’s ice. She’s smarter than her mom! 🙂
